More than a hundred lawyers who specialise in handling police complaints resigned from the advisory body of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) in protest at the “consistently poor quality of decision-making at all levels of the IPCC”.

Pakistan's official Internet regulatory body has ordered all Pakistani ISPs to block access to YouTube until further notice, claiming that the proportion of “non-Islamic objectionable video” had increased to an unacceptable level. Pakistani bloggers suspect a video showing vote-rigging may also be a cause. Because of configuration issues, the block even affected people outside Pakistan.

Wikileaks, the whistleblower site that recently leaked documents related to prisons in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, was taken offline last week by its U.S. host after posting documents that implicate a Cayman Islands bank in money laundering and tax evasion activities. Those behind Wikileaks include Tibetan, Chinese and Thai political campaigners. Guardian article

The newly-elected Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has issued a formal apology to the country's indigenous people for the historic injustices they have suffered. Many Aboriginal organisations had called for a formal acknowledgement of the wrongs committed against them, in particular the policy of removing Aboriginal children from their families and placing them in white foster homes.

Using technology originally designed to scare away vermin, the ‘Mosquito’ is a device that emits a very high frequency buzzing sound which cannot be heard by people over the age of 25.

The US government is seeking the death penalty against six men currently held at Guantanamo Bay which it calls “high-value” detainees. Five of the six men charged were held for more than three years in secret CIA custody at unknown locations before being transferred to Guantanamo in September 2006. The CIA has also confirmed that at least one of the men charged was subjected to simulated drowning.
