Banning plastic bags must be just a start, according to the makers of a new BBC Natural History Unit film about Hawaii's marine ecosystem. A 2006 Greenpeace report found at least 267 marine species known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of marine debris. An estimated 1 million seabirds choke or get tangled in plastic nets or other debris every year.

After an action brought by industry, 2007 European regulations that limit promotion of infant formula, and require companies to explain that it is not sterile, will not apply until 2010, the High Court has ruled. The Government, whose advisory body says the regulations are too weak, is appealing, and Baby Milk Action is calling for manufacturers to comply nevertheless with the regulations, and for Trading Standards to remove non-compliant labels. UK breastfeeding rates are amongst the lowest in the industrialised world.
