A domain name is a unique name that identifies you or your organisation on the Internet. It is registered in the form of yourname.co.uk or yourname.org.uk, yourname.net or yourname.com or yourname.org. You choose which form you prefer depending on the nature of your organisation or content. The domain can then be used for your e-mail adresses e.g username@yourname.org.uk and web site URLs e.g www.yourname.org.uk depending on the package you have chosen.

All of our web hosting options (except Home/Activist membership, which includes a .gn.apc.org subdomain) come with a domain name registration and include annual renewal.

All GreenNet’s packages are available with domains ending in the following: .co.uk, .org.uk, .org, .com or .net. In order to register a different domain get in touch with Support and check for prices and availability. If you are registering a top level domain (org, .com, or .net.) we advise you to register the .uk equivalent to prevent it from being snapped up by an organisation with a similar name, which might confuse your intended viewers, or speculators who may try and sell the domain back to you at an inflated price.

UK Domain names

All domain names ending with .uk (this could be .org.uk or .co.uk for example) have to be registered through the UK registrar, Nominet. GreenNet is an registered tag holder and member of Nominet (the GreenNet tag is ‘GN’). This means we can register or renew your domain as part of your hosting package.

If you are transferring your domain to be managed and controlled by GreenNet as part of a hosting package, domain service or domain parking, simply tell your current domain registrar to transfer your domain’s tag to the ‘GN’ tag, and they should take care of the rest. This process can take up to 24 hours once confirmed by Nominet and the previous domain registrar.

By registering a UK domain you are entering into a contract with Nominet. This requires you to agree to Nominet’s terms and conditions.

For more information about Nominet, visit their website at: http://www.nominet.org.uk

All other Domain names

All domain names ending with .org, .com or .net for example, are registered through a USA registrar.

If you are transferring your domain to be managed and controlled by GreenNet as part of a hosting package, you need to ask your current domain registrar to unlock your domain and to give you a transfer code. With this transfer code, GreenNet requests the transfer, your current registrar sends you a confirmation email and if you do not respond to this email within 5 days the process needs to start again. Once you confirm the transfer it can also take up to 24 hours for the whole process to be completed.

Domain renewals

We renew domain name registrations each year when the registration expiry date approaches, as long as your GreenNet account is current and not in arrears. To avoid automatic renewal if you do not wish to renew your domain name, please contact us before the 1st of the month preceding the month in which the domain expires. However, if you request cancellation of the domain after that date, we will not charge for the domain renewal that may have happened.

If you have any questions about the above or would like further clarification please contact GreenNet Support on 0330 35 4011 or by email support@gn.apc.org
