The Women's Rights Programme of the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is looking for a feminist movement builder, dynamic communicator and experienced project coordinator with a background in ending gender-based violence, to join APC’s virtual team. The Ending Online Gender-based Violence project coordinator will be responsible for strengthening and growing APC's network of activists and organisations working in this area, coordinating work with partners in different countries, and designing strategies for intervention, including working on the collaborative global Take Back the Tech! campaign.
APC is a global network of civil society organisations whose mission is to empower and support organisations, social movements and individuals in and through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to build strategic communities and initiatives for the purpose of making meaningful contributions to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability.
Purpose of the job: The successful candidate will join APC’s Women's Rights Programme (APC WRP) to coordinate and manage a multi-country project on ending online gender-based violence. This includes building and supporting the network of partners and campaigners, development of collective analysis and strategic interventions based on data and research, leading in monitoring and evaluation, managing campaign-related communications spaces, managing project budget and expenses, and liaising with consortium partners. The coordinator will also contribute to APC WRP's work on feminism and technology, especially around movement building.
Start date: 20 July 2018
Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a 0.6 full-time equivalent (FTE) position on contract for an initial 12-month period, which includes a three-month probation period. The contract is renewable for three years depending on performance. Remuneration is based on APC’s salary scale. Location: The successful applicant may work from anywhere in the world provided they have reliable and consistent internet access. APC provides an equipment allowance and requires staff to use their own computers and office equipment. International and regional travel will be required as part of the work. Background on APC WRP's work on ending gender-based violence
APC has been a global leader in advancing the work on recognising and ending online gender-based violence. Our work hinges on collaboration and partnership with activists and organisations in different parts of the world, in particular, from the global South. Through multiple, interrelating strategies, we work to deepen the understanding of the different dynamics of online gender-based violence and its impact on the enjoyment of rights, and to develop responses that reflect the experiences of diverse communities of people. Take Back the Tech! is an award-winning campaign that encourages women and girls to use technology to counter gender-based violence. Established in 2006, TBTT is an initiative of the Association for Progressive Communications, but it is shaped by local campaigners.
The All Women Count: Take Back the Tech! project is a four-year project from that builds on this work. The project is implemented by the APC WRP as part of the the All Women Count consortium. The consortium’s focus is on violence against women (VAW), in particular violence experienced by women, girls and trans* people at risk (LBT, sex workers and women and girls with disabilities). As such, our work, and that of consortium partners, will strengthen the ability of global South-based human rights organisations and activists to advance legal and policy responses to VAW, change harmful social norms, and build the capacity of women, girls and trans* people at risk to combat violence and advocate for their rights.
Consortium activities take place primarily in three regions: South Asia, East Africa and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and online around the world. The in-country activities of the AWC consortium members take place in India, Kenya, Burundi, Egypt, Lebanon, Tanzania and Uganda. In-country activities specifically for APC's project take place in India, Kenya, Egypt and additionally in Malaysia.
APC WRP's primary aim in this project is to challenge harmful social norms that contribute to the perpetuation of gender-based violence; in particular, to identify, understand and analyse internet culture(s) that contribute to the circulation of harmful social norms in the target countries. During the first year of the project, we undertook research to bring a feminist analysis to the ways online discourses that enable violence against women present, translate and mutate. In year two and going forward, the project will focus on Take Back the Tech! campaign convenings and actions, including a global TBTT Camp and creation of sustained content that draws on research findings through local country partners and surfaces diversity in voice and in experiences that challenge discriminatory norms, values and power structures.

Qualifications and capacity

Sound knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of gender-based violence, in particular, online gender-based violence.

Demonstrated commitment to intersectional feminist politics and experience in community building and activism, in particular, movement building in a digital age.

Understanding of discursive theories of change, working knowledge in data analytics, in particular, social media data analysis, or knowledge in quantitative research and analysis is an advantage.

Experience in collaborative campaigning, particularly through digital networks.

Strong capacity in producing engaging, accessible content for different audiences (e.g. calls to action, website content, social media posts, articles).

Experience in grant-funded project coordination and management of project deliverables, team members and budget.
